Explaining 1970s Fashion
Hello dolls, 🌼
and welcome to "Explaining 1970s Fashion"!
We're finally venturing into another, my second favorite, decade: Welcome to the 70s!
Fashion in the 1970s was all about expressing individuality and breaking conventions. Vogue famously declared, "There are no rules in the fashion game now," reflecting the era’s departure from traditional styles due to a surge in affordable, synthetic clothing. The decade saw a mix of mini skirts, bell-bottoms popularized by the hippie movement, and the glam rock and disco influences that introduced platform shoes, vibrant colors, and shimmering fabrics.
The 1970s also embraced a range of trends: fitted blazers, mini and maxi skirts, hot pants paired with tight tees, and flared pants. Pastel shades gave way to bolder colors like rust and tangerine. Platform shoes, including clogs and sandals, were popular, as were boots in diverse styles, from Go-go to granny boots.
By 1974, T-shirts had evolved from being merely underwear to a fashion staple, featuring elaborate designs like slogans and sports team logos. The early 1970s’ loose, flowy shirts gave way to more fitted tops, signaling a shift in style.
As the hippie look faded by the mid-1970s, casual fashion remained prevalent, with women favoring sweaters, T-shirts, cardigans, and denim.
Bell-bottoms were a true hallmark of 1970s fashion. The wider the flare, the more pronounced the effect. Whether worn to make an entrance on the boulevard or dancing beneath the lights of a chic nightclub, bell-bottoms added an unmistakable flair. Paired with a fitted tee or an elegant blouse, they created a look that was both classic and effortlessly stylish.
By 1973, androgynous glam rock fashion had become mainstream among young British people of both sexes. Unisex outfits with minimal differences between men’s and women’s clothing became popular, with colors like cream, burgundy, brown, and orange.
The '70s were a golden era for fashion designers and boutiques that pushed boundaries and captured the spirit of the time. Halston was a major player, known for his minimalist yet glamorous designs. His flowing dresses, one-shoulder gowns, and ultra-luxurious fabrics became disco staples, especially for celebrities like Bianca Jagger and Liza Minnelli.
In London, Biba was a legendary boutique that defined the '70s look with its mix of Art Deco, boho, and glam rock styles. Founded by Barbara Hulanicki, Biba attracted fashion-forward crowds with its dramatic silhouettes, crushed velvet fabrics, and dark, moody color palette.
Women like Stevie Nicks and Farrah Fawcett were style icons with their unique and wonderful looks which inspired many young women.
So, that’s the '70s for you-a decade that *didn’t hold back*. Whether you’re into the boldness of glam rock, the freedom of boho chic, or the disco diva energy, the '70s left a lasting impact on fashion that still resonates today. So tell me, which '70s trend would you rock right now? Let me know in the comments, and as always, don’t forget to subscribe for more style inspo! Catch you later, dolls!
All my lovin,
xx Emma 💌

I enjoy your videos a lot. The early 70's were quite a bit different then the late 1970's. Disco styles were more popular in the later 1970's. (Ha, ha, not my favourite), with polyster shirts and pants for both men and women, men wearing gold chains around their neck on the disco floor. Of course, Farrah Fawcett's feathered hairstyle, because super popular. I remember girl's wearing hot pants (super short shorts) in the early to mid 70's. I cannot believe I wore a pair of hot pants when I was very young and so slender. They were pink. Of course we could not wear them to high school as they were not allowed at my high school. Just wore them sometimes in the summertime. Oh...so long ago when I was young, 5' 1" and maybe 105 pounds. 😊 By the way, did you grow up in USA?

The big problem with Disco was that almost no one could actually dance that well. I remember well the night disco died. It was on a Friday, and nobody mourned its passing. The 70s was a weird time, but it was fun in its own way. At least we got tee-shirts out of it all - that would be a fun video. Thanks for this video. It brought back some laughs. Stayin' Alive, Stayin' Alive.

When I was young, growing up in 60's and 70's I wanted to look like Patty Boyd or her younger sister, model, Jenny Boyd. I especially envied Jenny Boyd,,because my favourite folk singer, Donovan really liked Jenny a lot and wrote a song for her, called "Jennifer, Juniper." He invited her to one of his photo shoots for cover of one of his 60's albums and you can see Jenny Boyd on that cover with Donovan. She is playing a flute and is a fairy tale looking beautiful.

I can't help but connect the aesthetics of the hippies, the bohemians, and other counter cultures of this time as in a tangential way, a rejection of Anglo, American, and North Western European Protestantism, the Protestant Work Ethic, and the Protestant ideas of modesty and prudence and in a small way an embrace of Catholic Medieval Europe. Though virtual all Christians today view the art and ornate designs of medieval Catholic/Gothic European cathedrals with high regard and and high praise, for centuries, Protestants in England, North America, and Northwestern Europe looked down on the Catholic counterpart as excessive, imprudent, sometimes even calling the ornate artistry of Catholicism wasteful and idolatrous. The Protestant Work Ethic is, among other things, the guiding principle of the Anglo-Saxon culture and most other English-speaking nations. Though its not like the hippies were attending mass or praying the rosary- creating communes and going on psychedelic trips is far from a traditional Catholic life-- I feel a very faint echo of Old European Catholicism in these subcultures.

Great video. My Mr Man was supposed to go to Woodstock. He was 15 at the time. His mother told him that it was going to rain all weekend. So he stayed home. However, his best friend did go. They got to the bridge about a 1/2 mile away and walked to the field that was to be Woodstock. Music festivals have learned how NOT to hold a festival from Woodstock. There was no food, water, or restroom facilities. They were wet, they were hungry, it was a mess, still with ALL that. He says to this day that he would have done it all over again. But carry a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter.

My bandmates and I went from Surf sound to Garage and then to Psychedelic sound. We combined elements of the aforementioned musical forms. Things started to change musically for me in 1965 with Dylan and The Byrds. "Revolution" by The Beatles in 1966 was a watershed LP. George Harrison's sitar-laced "Tomorrow Never Knows" was my first love affair with Psychedelia. I didn't ingest psychotropic drugs. I only smoked grass only once (in 1966). I didn't need drugs to get my head "right." The Psychedelic music and art was the flight reaction for me. Peter Max created some great artwork, as well. Peter got his inspiration for his use of colour from Chinese folk art. Victor Moroso's use of blue and orange in his artwork did the thing for me. Artists such as Stanley Mouse and Rick Griffin created some very iconic album cover art. Emma Rosa Katharina, you did a great job on this video. "Dance The Night Away" (Cream) is my Psychedelic tune of choice. Peace, love, joy, and hope be your journey.
